Timur Lang (Tamerlane) led his Tatar armies in campaigns which took Afghanistan, Persia, Kurdestan, Baghdad, Moscow, Northern India, Syria, until he finally died in China. Under his successors, Samarkand became a centre of Muslim civilisation.
