The Group of Eight (G8) is an association of the major industrialized democracies. Prior to the admission of the Russian Federation in 1998, the organization was referred to as the Group of Seven (G7). The G8 member nations are Canada , France , Germany , Italy , Japan , Russia , the United Kingdom and the United States .
