Arizona, the 48th of the United States, is located in the desert Southwest on the US border with Mexico, bounded by Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, and California. It achieved statehood in 1912 with its capital at Phoenix, following prolonged conflicts with the native Apache peoples. Most of the land is arid plateau, with mining and ranching remaining prominent industries along with manufacturing and handicrafts. It is also home to the Grand Canyon. More than one quarter of Arizona is designated as Indian reservation.
